The First People
Many thousands of years ago, when the world was newly created, the Great God felt lonely, and decided to create the first people to live on his new world. He created these people out of clay, and baked them in his fire.
The first time, God made one man and one woman out of clay, put them in his fire, then went away to get on with some other work that he needed to do. Many hours later, he remembered these people, came back and took them out of the fire – but he saw that they had become completely burnt and blackened. They became the first Africans.
The second time, once again God made one man and one woman out of clay, then put them in his fire. Now, he was afraid that they would be burnt again, so he very soon took them out of the fire, before they were properly baked. These people were completely white; they became the first Gàdje.
Finally, God made a third man and woman out of clay and put them in his fire. This time, he baked them just right: when he took them out of the fire, he saw that they had a beautiful, dark-golden colour… they became the first Roma, and God was very happy with them!
